About Us

Decathlon Construction was founded by Jerry Terry on March 12th, 2003. The decision to start a construction company was based on Jerry’s desire to make a difference, entrepreneurial spirit, and already having a wide array of construction knowledge from growing up around the business (his father was a home builder).

The name “Decathlon” came from the Track and Field event that Jerry used to get through college. The Decathlon encompasses 10 different events into one combined point total. The events are the 100 meter dash, long jump, shot put, high jump, 400 meter run, 110 meter hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin, and 1500 meter run. In his 8 years of competing in the event, it assured him college tuition, as well as a Patriot league championship and Junior All-American honors. His life during that time was dedicated to the Decathlon, which demanded constant commitment, vicious discipline, and relentless optimism.  By taking this passion into the Outdoor Living market, taking the name Decathlon with him was a perfect fit, and a daily reminder of what drives him every day.

Decathlon started very small. Jerry owned a hatch back Saturn, which could carry some lumber… if you drove slow so that it didn’t bang off the ground. It was Jerry, his Saturn, a small skeleton crew of tools, and a friend from high school who helped out when he was available. With focus, determination and constant target setting (and quite literally blood, sweat and tears); Decathlon grew, and after 15+ years has become the predominant Outdoor Living Company in the Dallas Metroplex. Jerry attributes the current state of Decathlon to his mission statement: To go ALL IN to create an outstanding experience, using a committed, disciplined, and optimistic process that creates Outdoor Living spaces.

In 2009 the versatility of Decathlon grew a great deal, as Jerry met his future wife and future co-owner and office manager of Decathlon Construction, April Terry. At the time, April was studying political science, but remarked that she was really not sure what to do with it. Light bulbs went off as Jerry realized that dealing with cities, permits, inspectors, and customers could provide a great deal of satisfaction to someone who wants to use their political and people skills. April added another level of customer service and professionalism to Decathlon. It was through April’s skills that the company was able to expand further, and provide more services, and more importantly, an extraordinary experience on the service end to add to the product itself.

Both the in house teams and the subcontractors for Decathlon have been with the company for many years. It is this consistency of people and the powerful mission statement by which Decathlon can guarantee the quality of its product and process. After over 15 years and over 3000 jobs completed, the company has a vast experience level and understanding of what it takes on its promise, to deliver an outstanding experience through Outdoor Living. Decathlon Construction is, simply put, the best at what they do, and they take great pride in the guarantee that you can trust the committed, disciplined, and optimistic process.
